In accordance with TechFlow, x402, a payment protocol launched by Coinbase in May 2025, has seen explosive adoption, processing nearly 500,000 transactions in the week of October 14–20, a 10,780% increase from the previous four weeks, followed by over 932,000 transactions the next week, a 34,300% rise. The protocol, built on HTTP 402 status code, enables seamless, machine-friendly transactions and challenges traditional tax and financial systems by enabling micro-payments and AI-driven autonomous transactions.
