As reported by Cointribune, X (formerly Twitter) has launched its Handle Marketplace, a platform where inactive usernames can be claimed or purchased by Premium Plus and Business subscribers. The initiative, aimed at creating a new revenue stream amid declining ad income, allows users to acquire rare handles for prices ranging from $2,500 to over $1 million. These handles are non-transferable and remain permanently linked to the account. The system has drawn criticism for its lack of transparency, particularly regarding the criteria for defining inactive accounts and setting prices. Past incidents, such as the forced reassignment of usernames like @x and @Cameron, have raised concerns about user rights and centralization of control.
