BlockBeats report: On May 18, the Verus official team announced that the Verus-Ethereum cross-chain bridge was attacked on May 18, during which the attacker stole assets such as ETH, USDC, and tBTC from the Ethereum contract. Other assets on the bridge remain unaffected at this time.
The official statement indicates that, due to the attack, the Verus network has been temporarily halted, and most block-producing nodes have been voluntarily taken offline as designed. The development team is currently investigating the attack vector, assessing the extent of the losses, and formulating a response plan.
Meanwhile, the Verus team has urged the attacker to voluntarily return the funds, stating that if the full amount is returned, they are willing to pay a bug bounty and waive further pursuit of liability; otherwise, they will cooperate with relevant law enforcement agencies to take legal action.
The team also reminded users to be cautious of scams impersonating the official platform with fake "compensation plans," stating that no official compensation program currently exists, and users should not interact with any related private message accounts.
