BlockBeats report, on May 1, the U.S. Senate rejected the sixth Democratic attempt to limit President Trump’s power to wage war against Iran, as the conflict nears the critical 60-day deadline, with Republicans continuing to firmly stand behind the Trump administration.
On Thursday, a procedural vote on a resolution introduced by California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff to advance a war powers resolution was defeated by a vote of 47 in favor and 50 against. The resolution would have directed the president to withdraw U.S. military forces from hostilities with Iran.
The 1973 War Powers Resolution requires the president to withdraw armed forces after 60 days if Congress has not authorized war. This 60-day period begins when the president formally notifies Congress. President Trump sent a letter to Congress on March 2 informing it of hostilities with Iran, meaning the 60-day period will end on Friday, May 1. The president may extend this period by an additional 30 days to facilitate troop withdrawal.
