As per Jinse, the U.S. Department of Justice has charged Anton Peraire-Bueno and James Peraire-Bueno, two MIT graduates, for exploiting a vulnerability in Ethereum’s MEV-Boost system to steal $25 million in cryptocurrency and engage in ransom threats. The brothers, arrested in May 2024, used their own validator nodes to intercept and repackage profitable MEV transactions, redirecting the proceeds to their wallets. After stealing the funds, they attempted to launder the assets and threatened victims with exposure to authorities unless they paid ransoms. The case marks the first U.S. criminal prosecution related to MEV attacks and highlights the legal consequences of exploiting blockchain vulnerabilities for financial gain.
