Uphold has launched U.S. stock trading services for users in the United States, adding over 4,000 U.S. stocks and ETFs to the platform. The company disclosed that users can directly convert supported crypto assets into stock or ETF positions within the same app, without needing to transfer funds to another platform or manually switch cash accounts.
Covers over 4,000 stocks and ETFs
This service integrates traditional securities products into Uphold’s existing cryptocurrency trading interface, making it available to U.S. customers. According to the company, users can convert from crypto assets to securities products in a single step, eliminating the need for fiat currency exchanges, stablecoin intermediaries, and cross-account transfers.
Uphold’s U.S. President Nancy Beaton said the platform aims to bring stocks and crypto assets into a single investment gateway. She gave the example of users being able to sell Bitcoin within the app and directly purchase Berkshire Hathaway stock.
Future plans include extending trading hours.
The company stated that the next step will be to extend trading hours to five days a week, 24 hours a day, covering pre-market, after-hours, and overnight sessions. If implemented, users will be able to respond to international economic data and changes in global markets outside regular U.S. trading hours.
From a business perspective, Uphold is attempting to offer on-chain financial services alongside traditional investment products on a single platform. The article cites industry data showing that over 160 million Americans hold stocks, accounting for approximately 62% of the U.S. adult population. Meanwhile, retail user engagement with digital assets is also rising, making such cross-asset platforms one of the competitive frontiers.
The transaction path still goes through the USD account.
However,所谓的“one-step trading” does not involve direct settlement of stocks with cryptocurrency assets. The company disclosed that after a user initiates a cryptocurrency purchase order for stocks, the relevant cryptocurrency assets are first converted into U.S. dollars by Uphold HQ, Inc., and the resulting U.S. dollar funds are then transferred to Uphold Securities’ securities account to purchase the corresponding stocks.
This means the process appears as a single operation on the front end, but behind the scenes, two affiliated entities handle separate tasks: one manages cryptocurrency conversion, and the other handles securities brokerage services. The company also stated that fees will be charged separately for each step.
- Convert crypto assets to USD first.
- Deposit USD into your securities account to complete the purchase.
- Cryptocurrency services and securities services are separately undertaken by affiliated companies.
Securities services are provided by licensed entities.
The company discloses that securities products are offered by Uphold Securities, Inc., a registered U.S. broker-dealer and member of FINRA and SIPC; clearing for related accounts is handled by Apex Clearing Corporation. Non-securities assets, including cryptocurrencies, precious metals, and fiat currency, are offered by Uphold HQ Inc.
Additional information: The company states that its services currently cover more than 140 countries and regions and are connected to over 30 trading venues to obtain liquidity and execution support.
