Tether, the issuer of the largest stablecoin USDT, has become the world's biggest private holder of gold outside of central banks. CEO Paolo Ardoino is purchasing 1–2 tons of gold weekly, with monthly expenditures exceeding $1 billion. The company currently holds 140 tons of gold, valued at $24 billion, stored in a nuclear bunker in Switzerland. Tether is building a gold-based financial infrastructure, including the XAUT token, as part of its broader strategy to incorporate real-world assets (RWA).
