The Sui Network stated that the Sui blockchain has resumed normal operations after being offline for approximately six hours. According to the team, the network experienced a halt at 14:15 UTC on May 28 and achieved full recovery by 20:32.
The issue is related to the version update.
Public information indicates that this outage was related to a crash vulnerability in version 1.72 of the software. The issue occurred in the gas billing logic, causing the network’s processing flow to stall and halting on-chain activity.
This means the outage was not caused by an external attack, but rather by a software issue introduced after the upgrade. The team stated that a more detailed post-incident review will be released soon.
Multiple protocols temporarily ceased service.
During the network outage, several protocols within the Sui ecosystem were affected, including Cetus, NAVI, and Panzerdogs. Activities related to the USDC stablecoin on Sui were also temporarily halted.
For users, the most direct impact of this outage is the temporary interruption of trading, settlement, and on-chain interactions. Although the network resumes operation once service is restored, application availability significantly declines during the outage.
- Start of downtime: May 28, 14:15 (UTC)
- Full restoration time: May 28, 20:32 (UTC)
- Affected Scope: Sui Ecosystem Protocols and USDC-related Activities
The team stated that there was no loss of funds.
The Sui Network stated that no user funds were lost in this incident. However, this outage once again highlights the operational risks associated with blockchain upgrades, particularly how changes to underlying logic can rapidly propagate throughout the entire ecosystem.
As the network recovers, the outside world will now focus on the team’s post-incident review and whether they will adjust future software release and testing procedures.
