Sui's mainnet experienced three major outages on May 28 and 29, 2026 (PT), linked to a blockchain upgrade introducing the Address Balances feature. The first two outages resulted from a crash in the gas billing logic, while the third occurred during an Epoch switch due to a flaw in the randomness state. A temporary fix restored operations but later caused another disruption. All confirmed transactions remained intact, and user funds were secure. The network is now fully operational. The incident underscores the risks of performing a network upgrade during live operations.

BlockBeats report: On June 1, the official Sui Chinese channel released a post-mortem of the mainnet outage, stating that between Pacific Time (UTC-7) on Thursday, May 28, 2026, and Friday, May 29, 2026, the Sui mainnet experienced three network outages. The first two outages were caused by a crash vulnerability arising from the interaction between the gas billing logic and the recently released version 1.72, which introduced the Address Balances feature. The fix implemented for the Thursday incident was a temporary measure aimed at restoring network operations as quickly as possible while the Sui core team developed a long-term solution. The team was aware that this temporary fix carried a very low probability of triggering further network failures, but accepted this risk to restore mainnet functionality promptly. On Friday morning, the network encountered another variant of this known issue, resulting in another outage.

The third outage occurred during the regular Epoch switch on Friday afternoon, when a long-standing defect in the random number state persistence was triggered as validator nodes restarted to deploy the fix released Friday morning, causing the network to fail again.

The outage times were as follows: First: began around 7:00 PT on Thursday, restored at 13:30 PT; Second: began around 5:00 PT on Friday, restored at 8:30 PT; Third: began around 13:30 PT on Friday, restored at 19:20 PT;

The team emphasized that user funds remained secure throughout the entire incident, and no confirmed transactions were rolled back after the network was restored. Currently, Sui validation nodes have fully patched the original Gas Charging and Randomness State vulnerabilities, and network activity has returned to normal.
