BlockBeats news: On January 23, according to Cointelegraph, a winter storm threatening much of the southern United States could potentially cause Bitcoin miners to halt operations. On Thursday, weather forecasting company AccuWeather stated that this "massive winter storm" could span 1,800 miles, stretching from the western edge of Texas to the mid-Atlantic coast, affecting more than 60 million people.
Historically, when major storms have disrupted the power grid, Bitcoin miners have voluntarily reduced their activities to ease the burden on the grid. In 2022, during a severe winter storm in Texas, cryptocurrency miners in the state voluntarily scaled back their operations.
Bitcoin environmental, social, and governance researcher Daniel Batten stated that as extreme weather events become more common around the world, the need for load balancing in Bitcoin mining will increase, especially as more solar and wind energy is integrated into the power grid.
