ChainCatcher report: Martin Habovštiak, developer of SlovakBitcoin and maintainer of the RustBitcoin library, has released a proof of concept that writes a 66 kB TIFF image file onto the Bitcoin blockchain in a single transaction without using OP_RETURN, Taproot, or OP_IF. The transaction is publicly verifiable on-chain and can be decoded back into the full image file. This experiment directly challenges BIP-110, a soft fork proposal promoted by Luke Dashjr aimed at restricting on-chain data storage. BIP-110, formerly known as BIP-444, seeks to limit the scale of data written to the blockchain, with some supporters arguing that such data storage practices deviate from Bitcoin’s core identity as a currency.

A SlovakBitcoin developer has embedded a 66 kB TIFF image into the Bitcoin blockchain via a single transaction. Martin Habovštiak, a RustBitcoin maintainer, created this on-chain data experiment without using OP_RETURN or Taproot. The transaction is publicly verifiable and challenges BIP-110, a proposal intended to limit blockchain data storage. This action underscores the ongoing debate over Bitcoin’s use for non-monetary purposes.
