Sentient Foundation officially announced its establishment on February 10. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that artificial general intelligence (AGI) remains open-source, decentralized, and aligned with human interests.
As the race toward AGI accelerates, the foundation emerges at a pivotal moment in AI’s development. The decisions we make today will directly determine whether this transformative technology serves all of humanity or becomes a tool of power in the hands of a few.
Core challenge: AGI cannot be monopolized by a few corporations
Today, some of the most powerful foundational models—such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude—are owned and controlled by private corporations. This should not be the case. This technology, which has the potential to define humanity’s future, must not be locked behind corporate walls, subject to shareholder interests rather than the public good.
But we still have reasons to remain optimistic. Models like DeepSeek and Qwen have already demonstrated that open-source AI can match or even surpass proprietary solutions. The question is no longer whether open-source AI can compete, but whether we can build the corresponding infrastructure, community, and support systems to ensure its ultimate success.
This is precisely the purpose of the Sentient Foundation: empowering researchers, developers, and institutions contributing to genuine open-source AI, so everyone can access and participate in the development of open-source AGI.

The Sentient Foundation will operate as a neutral and transparent steward of the open AGI ecosystem, responsible for research, governance, and global outreach:
Promote value alignment and safety:Establish relevant standards to ensure that AGI development aligns with human values and is subject to appropriate oversight.
Global Research Collaboration: Attract top AI researchers, academic institutions, thought leaders, and government agencies to serve as ambassadors and advisors.
Developer Support: Provide funding and support to the global open-source developer community.
Governance Framework:Coordinate and establish an inclusive governance structure for the responsible development of AGI.
Public Advocacy: Actively promote the idea that open-source AGI is the right path to beneficial AI through public forums such as"Open AGI Summit".

The foundation is inspired by the most successful open-source movements in tech history: Linux powers the majority of servers worldwide; Apache supports most web services; Android brought mobile computing to the masses. The Sentient Foundation believes that, given the stakes, AGI not only needs to adopt this open model—but urgently so.
