São Paulo has sued World and Amazon AWS for $47 million over misuse of biometric data. The case involves 400,000 users who received crypto rewards for data collection. Authorities allege the company violated data protection laws and targeted low-income users. The lawsuit seeks 240 million reais in damages and a freeze on data processing. The CFT investigation found that crypto markets were used to incentivize data sharing without user consent. Liquidity and crypto markets are now under increased regulatory scrutiny following this case.

Odaily Planet Daily reports that on Monday, the São Paulo Office of Consumer Protection filed a lawsuit against Tools for Humanity, the company behind World, and its hosting provider Amazon AWS, accusing them of abusive practices in their biometric data collection campaign in São Paulo. The lawsuit estimates that over 400,000 people participated in World’s promotion in São Paulo and demands the preservation of all data and metadata related to the data collection, as well as a suspension of any payments or benefits tied to biometric data collection until the assessment is complete. The lawsuit seeks to classify the activities as abusive and demands a payment of 240 million Brazilian reais (approximately $47 million) to compensate consumers for individual losses. Authorities state that World continued distributing cryptocurrency rewards via in-app transactions after Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority ordered it to cease operations in February 2025. The Iris Parliamentary Investigation Committee reported that World concentrated its promotion in peripheral and high-traffic areas to encourage individuals facing socioeconomic challenges to submit biometric data in exchange for cryptocurrency rewards. Authorities also allege that consumers were not informed of the economic objectives of the program or the risks associated with processing and storing their data on AWS servers.
