Beyond 1 Million: RippleX Expects XRPL AI Transactions to Reach 100 Million
The XRP Ledger is quickly establishing itself as a backbone for the AI economy, with RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele projecting that agentic transactions could surge from the recently surpassed 1 million milestone to between 10 million and 100 million over the next few years.
For Akinyele, reaching 1 million transactions marks the beginning of a much larger growth cycle rather than the destination. He expects increasingly capable AI agents, combined with improving blockchain infrastructure, to drive an explosion in autonomous machine-to-machine payments across XRPL.
"I was very pleased to see the 1 million milestone on XRP Ledger, but I think we'll blast through 10 million and may even get to 100 million within the next couple of years, given the pace of development with agents and how the infrastructure continues to get better," he said.
Unlike traditional blockchain activity initiated by people, agentic transactions are executed autonomously by AI agents.
These systems can purchase APIs, pay for cloud computing, subscribe to digital services, settle invoices, and transfer digital assets without human involvement. As AI agents become more sophisticated, demand for fast, low-cost, always-on payment infrastructure is expected to accelerate.

Akinyele likened the current state of AI payments to the early days of cloud computing, an industry with enormous potential but still lacking mature standards and tooling.
"When I think about where agentic payments are today, it reminds me of the early days of cloud infrastructure. The potential was obvious, but the tooling and standards were still coming together," he explained.
He believes the sector is now approaching an inflection point. As AI systems increasingly communicate and transact with one another, they will require payment rails that match the speed and efficiency of data exchange.
"That's exactly the kind of infrastructure the XRP Ledger was built to provide," Akinyele added.
Ripple is already helping shape that future. The company recently became a premier member of the Linux Foundation's x402 Foundation, supporting the development of open standards for AI-native payments.
The x402 protocol enables AI agents to send secure, authenticated payments directly over the web, reducing the friction of conventional payment systems.
Momentum is also accelerating through the XRPL AI Hub, a centralized ecosystem that brings together AI agents, developer tools, payment infrastructure, and real-world applications on the XRP Ledger. By lowering development barriers, the hub is designed to speed adoption of AI-driven commerce.
Therefore, Ripple's investment in AI payment standards, the launch of the XRPL AI Hub, and the rapid rise of agentic transactions underscore XRPL's expanding role beyond traditional finance.
If AI adoption continues at its current pace, autonomous software agents could generate tens of millions, or even hundreds of millions, of on-chain transactions, cementing the XRP Ledger as critical infrastructure for the next era of digital commerce.
