According to Bitcoin.com, Ripple is positioning XRP and its stablecoin RLUSD to revolutionize cross-border payments by reducing costs and increasing speed, drawing a parallel to how WhatsApp disrupted SMS services. On Nov. 30, Ripple Senior Executive Officer and Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Reece Merrick, stated on X that blockchain-based settlement could compress payment costs similarly to how data-driven messaging overtook SMS. He noted that SMS revenue once peaked at over $100 billion annually, but platforms like WhatsApp, which offered free messaging, rapidly gained over 1.5 billion users by 2018. Merrick emphasized that crypto could offer similar cost efficiency and adoption, with RLUSD playing a key role in modernizing global settlement.
