Google Quantum AI added urgency in late March when it published new research showing that elliptic curve cryptography used in blockchain systems may require fewer quantum resources to break than previously estimated.
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) news showed that Ripple also pointed to the “harvest now, decrypt later” risk. In that model, attackers collect public cryptographic data today and store it for later use.
If quantum hardware improves enough, that stored data could become a path to stolen funds or compromised accounts.

Ripple contrasted that with Ethereum, where no protocol-native equivalent exists, and users may need to move funds manually or rely on smart wallet structures in a post-quantum migration.

Ripple Quantum Roadmap Breaks the Shift into Four Phases
The first phase of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) upgrade centers on emergency recovery, sometimes described as Q-Day readiness. Ripple said it is exploring a contingency plan that could force a move away from classical signatures if those standards fail.
One route under review uses post-quantum zero-knowledge proofs to let users prove ownership and migrate funds without exposing compromised keys.
The second phase, set for the first half of 2026, focuses on testing NIST-recommended post-quantum algorithms and measuring trade-offs in performance, bandwidth, and storage.
Ripple said it is working with Project Eleven on validator testing, Devnet benchmarking, and early custody prototypes.
The third phase, planned for the second half of 2026, introduces hybrid deployment. Candidate post-quantum signatures would run beside existing elliptic curve systems so developers can test usability and system impact without disrupting the live chain.
The final phase aims for a full production transition by 2028, backed by an XRPL amendment and broader ecosystem coordination.
The XRP Ledger quantum upgrade, therefore, looks less like a single patch and more like a staged infrastructure rewrite. Ripple’s message is that quantum risk has moved into planning range, and XRPL intends to be ready before that window closes.
