ChainThink reports that, according to an internal farewell letter published by Joshua Achiam on X, OpenAI’s Chief Futurist, Joshua Achiam, will depart on the 24th of this month.
He stated that his departure was not triggered by a single event, but rather came after careful consideration, as he believes he can continue advancing the mission of safe AGI outside of a cutting-edge lab.
Achiam joined OpenAI as an intern in 2017 and has long been engaged in AI safety research, formerly serving as head of the Mission Alignment team.
After OpenAI disbanded the team in February this year, he transitioned to Chief Futurist, responsible for researching the impacts of AGI and more advanced AI on society, policy, and security.
In his farewell letter, he described the past nine years as “a period of centuries’ worth of change compressed into a decade,” and stated that the future depends on collective choices made by all parties regarding AGI and superintelligence. OpenAI has not yet announced a successor.
