According to ME News, on May 12 (UTC+8), blockchain independent investigator tanuki42 tweeted that a North Korean recruiter recently reached out, offering $300 per month for U.S. identities (or $150 for EU identities) to assist in registering and maintaining Upwork accounts, with an additional 15% commission after four months. The recruiter requested remote access to tanuki42’s computer via AnyDesk to circumvent Upwork’s IP monitoring. After tanuki42 agreed to connect, the recruiter briefly browsed the account before immediately ending the session and blocking tanuki42. Tanuki42 warned that intermediaries trading U.S. and EU identities are becoming an increasingly relied-upon money laundering channel for North Korea, potentially indirectly funding the regime.
