Odaily Planet Daily reports that Microsoft has announced plans to develop a large, cutting-edge AI model next year to build an internal alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic’s most advanced AI tools. Microsoft’s CEO of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, stated in an interview: “We must deliver technology at the absolute cutting edge. By 2027, our goal is for the model to reach true state-of-the-art capabilities in text, image, and audio generation and response.”
On Thursday, Microsoft’s AI division launched a speech transcription model that, according to claims, outperformed competitors on 11 benchmarks across the 25 most commonly used languages. However, similar to previous speech and image generation models released by the division, this model is optimized as a professional tool with significantly less training data than general-purpose models such as Claude 3 Opus or OpenAI’s GPT-4. Sulaiman stated that Microsoft is consolidating computing power to develop models with broader capabilities, having begun expanding its computational resources last October using a set of Nvidia GB200 chips. He said, “Over the next 12 to 18 months, we will progressively scale up to frontier-level computing capabilities.” (Jinshi)
