Microsoft announced a new commercial infrastructure for the agentic web, including a Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM), Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), and updated advertising tools. PCM compensates publishers for content used by AI platforms, while UCP connects AI agents to Shopify’s Global Catalog. Microsoft Clarity now offers AI Visibility, along with new AI Max search ads and Audience Generation tools. The company will charge low technical fees but no transaction commissions. This AI and crypto news emerges amid ongoing discussions about inflation data in the digital economy.

CoinDesk reports, according to monitoring by Beating, Tim Frank, Vice President of AI Monetization at Microsoft, announced a set of business infrastructure updates targeting the “agentic web,” aiming to ensure publishers, merchants, and advertisers remain discoverable, cited, and tradable in scenarios where AI agents make decisions on users’ behalf. The initiative is divided into three core components. First, the Publisher Content Marketplace (PCM). First reported by Axios last year, PCM is now being scaled up. It enables publishers to receive compensation when their paid content is cited by AI platforms, covering non-free information such as map data, product catalogs, news, and health information. Copilot is the first demand-side platform to integrate with PCM, and Microsoft is currently negotiating integrations with other AI platforms. Unlike the current one-time bundled licensing agreements (RAG) between publishers and AI platforms, PCM adopts a market-driven model of ongoing transactions. Second, commercial protocol support. Microsoft has officially launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) data source in Merchant Center—a collaborative open standard developed by Google, Shopify, and others—that allows AI agents to directly access structured product information. Microsoft has also integrated Shopify’s Global Catalog into Copilot, enabling over 500,000 merchants’ products to be searched and transacted within Copilot. Microsoft reports that top Shopify merchants have seen approximately a 90% increase in exposure within Copilot after integration. Copilot Checkout has been expanded to mobile and integrated with loyalty programs from retailers such as Target. Third, advertising and insights tools. Microsoft Clarity’s AI Visibility feature is being opened more broadly, helping brands track how often their web content is cited in AI responses, compare citation rates against competitors, and receive recommendations for content gaps. New features include AI Max Search Ads (in public beta this May), Offer Highlights (displaying product highlights within Copilot conversations), and Audience Generation (allowing users to describe target audiences in natural language, with AI automatically generating audience segments). Microsoft stated it will not take transaction commissions, only charging low-rate technology service fees. Frank emphasized that, for 51 years, Microsoft has focused on enterprise services and has no conflict of interest in competing with its customers as a platform.
