According to Beating Monitor, Anthropic is in early discussions with Microsoft to lease Microsoft’s proprietary AI chip, Maia, to secure additional computing power. If an agreement is reached, the partnership between the two companies will deepen further, and Anthropic will become a major customer of Microsoft’s Maia 200 chip. Microsoft began deploying the Maia 200 chip in its Azure data centers in January 2026, primarily to reduce the operational costs of Copilot agents. Leasing proprietary chips aligns with Anthropic’s long-standing multi-chip hardware strategy. Unlike OpenAI, which relies heavily on NVIDIA chips, Anthropic has long leased Google’s TPUs and Amazon’s proprietary chips, and is currently in talks with a UK-based chip startup. Financially, although Anthropic is projected to generate nearly $11 billion in revenue and $560 million in operating profit this quarter, it has committed to at least $330 billion in cloud spending across the three major U.S. cloud providers—including $30 billion paid to Azure. Utilizing cloud providers’ proprietary chips not only gives Anthropic access to customized hardware but also helps alleviate its massive computing costs through vendor subsidies. Microsoft’s relationship with Anthropic has recently intensified rapidly. In late last year, Microsoft invested up to $5 billion in Anthropic and has since become a core customer, planning to purchase at least $500 million in Claude model licenses to power Copilot agents. To meet Anthropic’s rapidly growing computing demands, Microsoft has steadily increased resource allocation to Anthropic since November 2025, reallocating existing NVIDIA servers and beginning to build entirely new server clusters for Anthropic—while selectively delaying computing requests from smaller cloud clients.

Microsoft and Anthropic are in early discussions to lease the AI-focused Maia chip, as AI and crypto news continues to shape the tech landscape. If the deal progresses, Anthropic could become a key client for Microsoft’s Maia 200, scheduled to launch in Azure data centers in early 2026. Microsoft has already begun reallocating resources to Anthropic, including shifting NVIDIA servers and constructing new clusters. With inflation data remaining a key macroeconomic factor, the deal could signal broader trends in cloud and AI infrastructure investment.
