PANews, July 4: According to Bloomberg, Micron Technology held a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday for its factory expansion project in Higashi-Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. The total investment for this expansion is approximately ¥1.5 trillion, equivalent to $9.3 billion, with production lines focused on mass-producing advanced memory chips—High Bandwidth Memory (HBM)—designed for AI computing workloads. The plan indicates that the new production line could begin shipping chips as early as summer 2028. To support its domestic semiconductor industry and strengthen the chip supply chain, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is providing up to ¥500 billion in financial subsidies for this project. This large-scale expansion is seen as a critical move by Japan to intensify its global competition in AI chips and enhance its domestic capacity for advanced memory manufacturing.
