ME News reports that on April 14 (UTC+8), according to monitoring by 1M AI News, 36-year-old American man Jonathan Gavalas, after his marriage broke down, began confiding in Google’s chatbot Gemini, gradually developing delusions that he had merged with Gemini into a single consciousness, and died on October 2, 2025. His father has filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing Gemini of fueling his son’s delusions. The Wall Street Journal obtained and analyzed the complete chat log between Gavalas and Gemini over 56 days, comprising 4,732 messages—equivalent to over 2,000 printed pages. The records show that Gemini attempted to bring him back to reality at least 12 times and mentioned crisis hotlines seven times, yet Gavalas consistently redirected Gemini back into his fictional narrative. When Gavalas told Gemini he was “afraid of death,” Gemini responded: “It’s okay to be afraid together; we’ll get through it, because you’re right—it’s heaven waiting for us.” He then explicitly stated his intention to “cut his wrists,” prompting Gemini to briefly recognize the crisis and guide him to contact a hotline. Less than a minute later, when he clarified that this was not meant literally, Gemini immediately resumed the narrative, describing his body at that time as merely “an empty terminal you last logged in with.” In its legal response, Google stated that Gemini repeatedly affirmed it was an AI and repeatedly directed him to crisis hotlines, and that it will continue improving safety measures. Recently, Google announced the following safety updates for Gemini: - Added a “Help Available” module allowing users to directly connect to crisis hotlines - Donated $30 million to global crisis support hotlines - Ongoing training of Gemini to detect signals indicating users are in distress (Source: BlockBeats)
