CoinMarketCap reports:

U.S. defense tech startup Mach Industries recently completed a $300 million Series C round, valuing the company at $1.8 billion. According to TechCrunch’s interview with founder Ethan Thornton, the company has raised approximately $485 million in total since its inception and is currently advancing six weapons projects simultaneously.

Thornton dropped out of MIT early to start a company. According to him, the company anticipated that future battlefields would be increasingly dominated by unmanned systems, and that the U.S. was still moving too slowly in advancing relevant capabilities. Based on this assessment, Mach chose not to bet on a single product but instead simultaneously developed platforms for strike aircraft, anti-ship missiles, high-altitude systems, anti-drone interceptors, and a new aircraft designed for naval logistics and strike missions.

Six projects have not yet reached full-scale production.

Currently, none of Mach’s six projects have entered full-scale mass production. Thornton stated that the company has secured approximately 13 government contracts, with most projects having moved beyond the initial design phase and into government testing facilities, but they are still some distance away from large-scale finalized production.

He stated that some systems are expected to be practically deployed by the end of this year, and the company also aims to bring three of these projects into stable mass production within the same timeframe. If these goals are achieved, production capacity will increase from hundreds of units per month to a higher level, and the company plans to build new factories to support this expansion.

Key components become the focus of expansion

Thornton believes that the real challenge for the industry is not just the platform itself, but the underlying supply chain—particularly the ability to acquire and manufacture critical components such as jet engines, solid rocket motors, and radar systems.

  • The Series C funding amount is $300 million.
  • The company's latest valuation is $1.8 billion.
  • Total funding amounts to approximately $485 million.

According to him, Mach自主研发并点火了两台喷气发动机,耗时仅约8个月,而传统周期通常长达数年。今年5月,公司还以5000万美元收购了固体火箭发动机企业Exquadrum。如今,零部件销售已占Mach收入的近一半。

Different from the Anduril route

In the U.S. defense technology sector, Mach is often compared to Anduril, Shield AI, and Saronic. Unlike competitors focused on expanding a single platform, Mach pursues multiple projects simultaneously. Thornton believes that defense competition is not a contest over a single product, but a prolonged struggle involving a variety of equipment.

However, in terms of scale, Mach still lags significantly behind leading companies. TechCrunch noted that Anduril raised $5 billion in May this year, reaching a valuation of $61 billion; Shield AI and Saronic also raised more funding and achieved higher valuations than Mach this year. Thornton’s assessment is that the U.S. is unlikely to outpace China comprehensively in manufacturing scale, so a more realistic path is to gain a first-mover advantage through faster product development and engineering translation capabilities.
