The Ethereum community has recently engaged in discussions surrounding Vitalik Buterin’s decision to pause his regular long-form writings in favor of authoring a science fiction novel about decentralized governance. Co-founder Joseph Lubin publicly expressed support, stating that this does not mean Buterin is distancing himself from Ethereum, but rather may represent a more effective form of communication.
Lubin publicly expressed support
Lubin stated on X that if someone believes Buterin writing fiction is a distraction from Ethereum’s development focus, they’ve misunderstood the point. He believes that fictional narratives are not necessarily inferior to technical articles—they may even convey complex ideas to a broader audience.
He described Buterin as one of the most important contributors and "stewards" of the Ethereum ecosystem, noting that he has always been an effective communicator. According to Lubin, this writing continues several long-standing themes emphasized by Ethereum, including open source, privacy, censorship resistance, and trusted neutrality.
New discussion on governance and AI
Buterin previously stated in May that he would pause his regular long-form blog writing and experiment with discussing decentralized governance through science fiction. He has completed the first two chapters and published them on his personal website.
The report shows that this work is not a traditional research article, but rather explores governance issues within a fictional setting. Disclosed content addresses topics such as quadratic voting, AI-assisted decision-making, and the limitations of DAOs in governance.
This also explains why the community’s response has been divided. In the past, Buterin’s technical articles often directly influenced Ethereum public discourse, so some users questioned whether this timing—amid price pressure on ETH and increased scrutiny of the foundation’s direction—was appropriate for such a publication. Others argued that the fictional format makes abstract governance concepts more accessible to outsiders.
Privacy concerns are heating up again
Beyond governance, privacy has also been a frequently mentioned keyword in this discussion. Some community users noted that the first two chapters of the novel already touched on themes of open source and privacy, and cited its settings to spark further discussion.
Privacy has also been an ongoing topic on Ethereum in recent years. Previously, reports indicated that Ethereum developers have been advancing the development of multiple privacy tools ahead of the network’s 10th anniversary, and Buterin has previously urged developers to focus on private currencies, private identities, private voting, and private communication.
From Lubin’s statement, he views this writing more as part of Ethereum’s external narrative rather than a shift in its technical roadmap. At this stage, the novel has not altered Ethereum’s technical roadmap, but it has once again brought Buterin’s public role, the foundation’s direction, and the ecosystem’s communication approach into the center of community discussion.
