Ethereum researchers have proposed a "native Rollups" proof-of-concept to validate Layer 2 state on the base layer. Built on EIP-8079 and the Ethrex client, it uses an EXECUTE precompile to verify on-chain data without ZK or fraud proofs. Smart contracts manage Rollup states, message bridging, and Merkle-Patricia proofs for withdrawals. Developers say this Layer 2 scaling solution improves maintainability and inherits Ethereum’s security. The project is in early exploratory stages.

PANews, March 11: According to The Block, Ethereum researchers have demonstrated a proof of concept for "native Rollups" using the execution client Ethrex, implementing EIP-8079 via a new EXECUTE precompile to directly replay and validate Layer 2 state changes on Ethereum’s base layer. This approach eliminates reliance on zero-knowledge proofs or fraud proofs, instead having Ethereum itself execute and confirm the validity of Rollup transactions. Smart contracts are used to track Rollup state, facilitate cross-layer message bridging, and verify withdrawals using Merkle-Patricia proofs. Developers state that native Rollups could simplify long-term Layer 2 maintenance by directly inheriting Ethereum’s security and upgrade properties, though the concept remains in the exploration and proof-of-concept phase.
