Ethereum Foundation member ladislaus.eth revealed Ethereum will adopt zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) for execution verification. The L1-zkEVM 2026 roadmap introduces EIP-8025, enabling validation nodes to verify block validity via ZKP without running a full EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) client. This shift aims to cut node hardware needs, reduce sync time, and allow higher gas limits. The change depends on ePBS in the Glamsterdam hard fork. The first L1-zkEVM workshop is set for Feb 11, 2026, covering topics like execution witness standardization and consensus layer integration.

Ethereum Foundation member ladislaus.eth posted that Ethereum is undergoing a key architectural transition, upgrading the block validation method from re-executing each transaction to validating zero-knowledge proofs (ZK Proofs). According to the recently released L1-zkEVM 2026 roadmap, this optional execution proof proposal, named EIP-8025, will allow validation nodes (zkAttesters) to confirm block validity without running a full execution layer client, merely by verifying cryptographic proofs. This change will significantly reduce the hardware requirements for running nodes, shorten the synchronization process from several hours to several minutes, and allow Ethereum to increase the gas limit without compromising decentralization. This feature relies on the upcoming ePBS (Proposer-Builder Separation) to be implemented in the Glamsterdam hard fork, which will provide a sufficient time window for proof generation. The first L1-zkEVM workshop is scheduled for February 11, 2026, and will discuss six sub-topics including execution witness standardization, zkVM-client API, and consensus layer integration.
