On-chain news broke on January 26, 2026, as Da Hongfei, founder of NEO, publicly responded to claims made by co-founder Erik Zhang. Da accused Zhang of misrepresenting facts and only sharing partial truths. He emphasized that he had been pushing for annual financial reports for the NEO Foundation (NF) and the Neo Global Development (NGD) to enhance transparency. Da also confirmed that Zhang would be allowed to post news and manage the Neo X account. Earlier, Zhang had called for financial oversight, cancellation of the EON project, and access to official social media accounts, all of which were denied. Funding-related news for the projects remains a key issue in the ongoing discussion.

BlockBeats News: On January 26, Da Hongfei, founder of NEO, responded to allegations made by Erik Zhang, one of the other two co-founders of NEO: "This is a distortion of the facts. The mechanism you clearly proposed today is that 'every transaction and all expenditures must be approved by me' (your exact words). This is not a mechanism at all, but rather a replication of the authoritarian management of the NF treasury. My exact words were: 'Starting this year, NF and NGD will publish financial reports in the first quarter of each year to enhance transparency and provide more detailed information based on previous reports.'"

I have already told you that you (and other community members) will be authorized to publish news and blogs on neo.org. Afterwards, I also privately mentioned that the Neo X account will be entrusted to you for content posting and to help accumulate followers for your new initiatives. You have repeatedly used this tactic of telling only "half-truths." Moving forward, we should record all our conversations.

For the sake of transparency, I proposed—and you agreed—that transactions between the NF Treasury, which you manage, and NGD would take place. The first batch of transactions amounted to $1 million, executed at spot prices. I also clearly explained the rationale: to increase NGD's stake in order to align interests more closely; and to provide you with operational funding to advance the Neo mainnet. I have always been very clear that I am only seeking a "limited collaboration." We still share a common goal: the growth and revival of Neo. Collaborating where our positions align, and independently pursuing our paths where we disagree, is the only way to resolve the governance stalemate that has plagued Neo in recent years. Please stop misinterpreting my words.

Previously reported, Zhang Zhengwen posted a statement saying, "My meeting with Da Hongfei, the founder of NEO, has just ended. He proposed so-called 'limited cooperation,' but provided no substantive content on any key issues. I clearly outlined three minimum requirements: establishing an effective and verifiable financial supervision and management mechanism; abandoning the EON project, which is a new initiative directly competing with NEO; and granting me the authority to release information through the official website and the official X (Twitter) account. All three of these requirements were explicitly rejected. Given the continued decline of NEO under his leadership over the past several years, I formally call on Da Hongfei to resign from his leadership position within the NEO ecosystem."
