ChainThink reports that on March 19, Block, the parent company of payment platform Square and Cash App, quietly rehired some employees who were laid off at the end of February. This round of layoffs, which initially affected approximately 4,000 people, was part of the company’s strategic transition toward artificial intelligence.
Several employees have revealed their return to the company on LinkedIn. Design engineer Andrew Harvard stated on March 3 that he was informed the layoff resulted from an "administrative error" and has accepted the company's offer to rejoin.
Richard Hesse, Head of Technology, said he spent two days convincing management that the work his team handled was "critical to customers" and required adequate staffing, leading the company to ultimately agree to rehire some of the laid-off employees. Chane Rennie, Head of Creative Strategy, also revealed on March 12 that he was asked to return to work about a week after the layoffs.
