Leonidas, a supporter of Bitcoin Ordinals, has launched the open-source client DOG Mode, aiming to adjust how nodes default relay certain transactions without modifying Bitcoin’s consensus rules. This move has reignited the debate surrounding Ordinals, Runes, and the use of block space.
Focus on Relay Strategy
The core of DOG Mode is not to fork Bitcoin or modify block validation rules, but to relax the default "standard transaction" restrictions enforced by node software. Leonidas argues that as long as a transaction complies with consensus rules and is willing to pay fees, it should not be filtered out by client software based on its purpose.
According to the announcement, DOG Mode increases the maximum weight limit for a single transaction under the default relay policy to 3.9 million weight units, compared to Bitcoin Core’s current default limit of 400,000 weight units. This client also lowers the dust threshold for small outputs to 1 satoshi.
Compared with BIP 110
This means that nodes running DOG Mode can relay certain valid transactions that other clients typically consider "non-standard." Whether these transactions ultimately make it into a block is still up to miners. Even if different nodes have different mempool contents, Bitcoin's consensus rules themselves remain unchanged.
The concept of DOG Mode stands in sharp contrast to BIP 110, which proposes temporary consensus restrictions on several high-data-volume transaction types, effectively attempting to tighten space for certain transactions at the protocol level.
Support remains to be seen.
Supporters of BIP 110 argue that such transactions increase storage costs and consume limited block space. Opponents worry that modifying consensus rules to restrict transactions that are currently valid could set a broader precedent for the future.
The report noted that Michael Saylor and Adam Back both opposed BIP 110, and as of mid-July, the proposal still had significantly less than the 55% activation threshold in miner signaling support. DOG Mode can begin operating without requiring universal network consensus, but whether it can have a real impact depends on whether nodes, miners, and users adopt this strategy.
