In accordance with Cryptonews, a new Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP-444) has sparked controversy within the Bitcoin community. The proposal, published by an anonymous developer under the alias 'Dathon Ohm,' suggests a temporary soft fork to limit the amount of arbitrary data in Bitcoin transactions. Supporters argue it aims to protect node operators from legal risks, particularly regarding illegal content such as child sexual abuse material. However, critics have accused the proposal of using 'legal threats' to coerce the community into compliance, with some calling it an 'attack on Bitcoin.' The contentious language in the document, including references to 'moral and legal impediments' and potential 'legal or moral consequences' for rejection, has drawn sharp criticism from developers and users. Luke Dashjr, a Bitcoin Core developer, supports the proposal but denies authorship. The debate has intensified following the release of Bitcoin Core v30, which removed a data limit on OP_RETURN, reigniting discussions about the blockchain's use for data storage. The proposal has not yet been submitted to Bitcoin’s official development mailing list.
