BlockBeats report: On March 14, the Australian government announced it would release approximately six days' worth of gasoline and five days' worth of diesel from its emergency fuel reserve, the first time this reserve has been tapped since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Australian Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the move aims to provide fuel suppliers with greater flexibility in allocation amid the Middle East conflict. Australia currently holds approximately 36 days of gasoline, 29 days of aviation fuel, and 32 days of diesel inventory.
This action is also part of a coordinated effort by the 32 member countries of the International Energy Agency (IEA) to release 400 million barrels of oil reserves, aimed at stabilizing global oil prices and ensuring supply. Meanwhile, the Australian government has temporarily relaxed fuel quality standards, expected to add approximately 100 million liters of gasoline supply per month over the next two months.
Due to the situation in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, international oil prices have risen rapidly recently, leading to fuel shortages in some parts of Australia.
