Apple introduced AI features for the Photos app at WWDC 2026, powered by Apple Intelligence, enabling photo reconstruction, expansion, and intelligent cleanup. The reconstruction feature allows users to adjust perspective by dragging, with AI automatically filling in blurred edges; the expansion tool can stretch images and correct tilted horizons; and the upgraded cleanup tool enables precise removal of distractions through tapping, brushing, or selecting areas. These features transform iPhone photo management into a “smart digital darkroom,” empowering everyday users to create professional-grade work.Article author and source: Apple Developer Conference
At the recently concluded WWDC2026 global developer conference, Apple officially infused its Photos app with powerful AI capabilities. Leveraging deep integration with Apple Intelligence, this everyday photo management tool has received a major upgrade, aiming to transform how users repair and adjust photos through generative AI technology.
The most notable feature in this update is the all-new "Reframe" function. In everyday photography, we often encounter regrets due to poor framing—such as unwanted signage appearing above the subject’s head, or missing a natural moment of eye contact. Now, with the AI-powered Reframe tool, users can simply drag to adjust the photo’s perspective, as if repositioning the camera to the ideal spot on location. This process supports real-time preview, and any blurred areas at the edges are intelligently filled in by Apple’s generative model, ensuring the image remains cohesive and naturally consistent with the original scene.

In addition to refactoring, the all-new "Extend" tool is equally useful. It helps users effortlessly stretch the frame to create more breathing room for the subject, or correct a tilted horizon to a level line without cropping out important details. Users simply need to pinch to zoom or adjust the crop, and the AI will intelligently extend the scene, instantly achieving a professional composition.
Additionally, the highly praised "Cleanup" tool has received an algorithm upgrade. Users can now more precisely select unwanted objects in the image by clicking, brushing, or drawing a selection. Thanks to optimizations in the underlying generative AI logic, the filled areas after cleanup exhibit higher quality and smoother transitions, with nearly invisible retouching.
Apple's recent moves clearly demonstrate its new strategy in image processing: AI is no longer just about simple filters or beautification, but has evolved into an "intelligent digital darkroom" capable of understanding scenes, reconstructing space, and repairing imperfections. For users accustomed to capturing life with their iPhone, these features ensure that every seemingly ordinary photo now holds the potential to become a "perfect masterpiece."
