Anthropic Study: Non-programmers using Claude Code achieve near software engineers’ success rates

Odaily Planet Daily reports that Anthropic’s latest large-scale agent programming report reveals that, with Claude Code assistance, the importance of programming skills themselves has decreased, while management and domain knowledge have become key factors influencing outcomes. Claude Code users average 20 hours of active usage per week. Among the top ten major professions, non-programmers’ success rate in using agents to write code has narrowed to within 7% of that of professional software engineers, with management roles slightly outperforming professional programmers. Users direct approximately 70% of planning decisions, while agents handle about 80% of execution decisions. Expert-level conversations can trigger up to 12 actions and generate 3,200 words in a single session—more than five times the output of beginner-level sessions. Beginners abandon sessions after encountering errors at a rate of 19%, while intermediate and expert users abandon sessions at rates of 5% to 7%. Over seven months, the share of debugging sessions aimed at fixing broken code dropped from 33% to 19%, while the shares of direct deployment, data analysis, and non-code documentation writing doubled, with the average estimated value of tasks increasing by approximately 25%.
