BlockBeats news, June 15: According to Chosun Biz, top Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has officially opened an office in Seoul. This follows the firm’s announcement of its Asia expansion plan in December last year, approximately six months later. a16z cited South Korea’s global competitiveness in AI, manufacturing, defense, crypto, content, and consumer goods, along with its highly skilled technical talent and strong market adoption, as the primary reasons for selecting Seoul as its Asian strategic hub. The Seoul office will initially focus on the crypto sector, with plans to gradually expand its scope of operations.
a16z previously made early investments in global tech giants such as SpaceX, Instagram, Facebook, and Airbnb. The newly appointed a16z GTM Lead for Crypto in Asia-Pacific, Park Sung-mo, will be based in Seoul and leverage his experience at Naver and the Monad Foundation to support a16z portfolio companies entering the Korean and broader Asian markets. a16z states it will go beyond mere investment, fostering company growth through talent acquisition, business expansion, policy collaboration, media support, and building a strong partner community.
