I've always cared more about who's actually following me than the number itself. Getting followers is easy if that's all you're chasing, it's the quality that's hard. Got hit with a bunch of bot follows recently. While looking into how to clean things up, I found the @futurepost extension. It can run in the background and stays within X's limits, but honestly, I don't push it. I just safely remove about 30 bots a day. Slow and steady. You can also filter by things like inactivity or location, which is nice. It's also really good for catching people who follow you and unfollow 2 days later, that one's oddly satisfying to clean up.
