What Already Exists Scaffolding
fills the chapel. Years
of work
above the floor:
 pigments,
 repeated labor,
 figures
developing
across the ceiling
while those below
cannot yet
see the whole. The making
is known differently by those
who were present
for the labor. November.
 The scaffolding
is gone. People enter, stand together, and look upward. What was made
over years
becomes visible
as a complete work
to those
who were not there
while it was formed. The unveiling
does not begin
the work’s significance.
 It begins
a different kind
of relationship
with what already
exists. The maker and the work are not the same thing. Above them, the ceiling remains. One history
belongs
to the years
of labor.
 Another begins with those who come to stand beneath it. Both
are real.
 They are not
