An important part of Bitcoin for me is its history. You often hear that there are better cryptocurrencies, that newer technologies are emerging, that something can be done faster, better, more efficiently. And that’s fine. But there’s one thing that cannot be improved or recreated from scratch. HISTORY. Bitcoin is Satoshi Nakamoto, Hal Finney, Len Sassaman, and many others. It’s the people and the entire cypherpunk community from which the ideas of digital money emerged. It’s earlier projects and concepts like Hashcash, b-money, Bit Gold, and RPOW. It’s the year 2008, the whitepaper, the launch of the network, and everything that followed. And this history cannot be copied. To me, it’s a bit like fine whiskey. A new bottle might be better, perhaps even taste better, but for a collector, the story of that specific bottle—where it came from, when it was made, what happened to it—matters immensely. The same goes for art. Someone today could paint something more beautiful, larger, or more impressive than the Mona Lisa or Lady with an Ermine. But that changes nothing. Those paintings have their own history—and that’s precisely what cannot be recreated. That’s how I view Bitcoin. I’m not saying Bitcoin is the only, best, and unmatched in every way. I’m saying it contains something that no other, later project can ever have. You can build a better technology. You can create something faster, more efficient, more advanced. But you cannot recreate the same HISTORY again. #btc
