Something happened at the workshop today that reminded me how much time a simple disagreement can eat up. A worker finished a job and told me it was done. I checked it and pointed out something that still needed attention. He looked at it, explained why he thought it was fine, and suddenly we were both standing there arguing over one small part of the job. That is when Albert’s line from Unchained came back to me: “The average court case takes 344 days.” 344 days. For a small disagreement, most people would rather just forget the whole thing than spend months trying to settle it. @GenLayer puts another number beside that: about five minutes for a first verdict, costing roughly fifty cents to a dollar. Then you have around 30 minutes for the first appeal, with the full appeal path taking around three hours and about $100. What stood out to me is that the first verdict doesn’t need to solve every possible disagreement forever. It just needs to give both sides an answer quickly enough to keep the original deal from becoming the bigger problem. At the workshop, we were arguing over one small job.
