What happens when Michigan students and the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine come together? The answer is Epic. At Designing an Unreal Future: An Epic × Michigan Industry Day at the Center for Academic Innovation, students went beyond imagining and explored the technologies already transforming how we build and innovate. Alongside Epic Games and leaders from Rivian, Omnicom, and Bombardier, students experienced how Unreal Engine is pushing real-time technology beyond gaming and into automotive, aviation, design, media, and more. Throughout the day, they got an introduction to Unreal Engine, stepped into automotive and aerospace demos, and brought their own work to automotive industry professionals for one-on-one portfolio reviews. They also heard directly from professionals about building careers in real-time 3D and how the technology is being put to work across industries today. And the exploration isn’t over! A student talent competition with Podium Education and Epic Games is challenging participants to put their ideas into practice to envision the future of mobility and transportation. A huge thank you to these industry leaders and to faculty from the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the University of Michigan School of Information for sharing their expertise and encouraging students’ emerging talent. The only question left to ask is: what will they build next?
