Someone asked me what the difference between Mbappé and Ronaldo is. Simply put: Mbappé scores a lot of goals. I don’t think anyone denies that. But he scores many of these goals against teams we probably would have beaten even if he wasn’t there anyway. Last season’s stint under Arbeloa is proof of this. We kept winning in his absence. Nobody really missed him. Goals like that carry very little weight for the club. With ALL the goals he has scored for us, there still isn’t a single moment that stands out as a truly memorable moment of joy for the club. They mostly serve himself. Ronaldo, on the other hand, scored against everyone — from the easy matches to the crucial, title-defining ones. It didn’t matter if the opposition had the best defence in the world, the best tactics, or the best manager. His presence mattered because his goals actually changed outcomes and won us titles. The guy would score a hat-trick in a Champions League semi-final, a brace in the final, a crucial winner in a knockout tie, etc. He was an absolute nightmare to play against. That’s the difference for me: Ronaldo’s individual brilliance directly benefited the team and the club as a whole. His goals weren’t just statistics. They mattered when the stakes were highest.
