At the Port of Genoa, customs authorities seized over 49,000 decorative accessories. Testing of the seized items revealed the presence of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium. The products, imported from China, were discovered before entering the Italian market. The issue lies in the oversight of low-cost accessories—goods that appear harmless but could enter the market as everyday or fashion items. Although EU regulations on chemical substances have been strengthened, products that bypass inspections within international supply chains continue to be identified. This seizure highlights the need to verify not only the price of imported goods, but also their manufacturing processes and safety standards. It raises the critical question: at what stage, and by whom, is the safety of products reaching consumers guaranteed?
