I know this is not your regular story but stay with me.... I was reading an article about the rivalry between Edison and Nikola Tesla.... man I learnt a lot Tesla briefly worked for Thomas Edison and helped improve Edison’s DC generators They later started having issues when Tesla pushed alternating current (AC), while Edison strongly backed direct current (DC) The problem for Edison was that AC could be transmitted over much longer distances, obviously more economically than DC, giving it a major advantage for large scale power distribution So what did Edison do? Baba started a campaign to discredit AC and convince the public that it was extremely dangerous Animals were publicly electrocuted using AC to demonstrate its potential to kill He even supported the use of AC for executions Even self around1890, William Kemmler became the first person to be executed by electric chair, using an AC powered system Men, I learnt a whole lot from this story. You might look at Edison’s actions and say he played dirty, but I also see a man doing everything he could to remain at the helm of his industry while a competing technology threatened the system he had built And eventually guess who won? AC won the battle in the long run and became the dominant system for electric power transmission Oops...
