Another fire broke out at the prison in Viterbo, Italy. On the evening of September 19, the isolation wing of the Nicandro Izzo Prison was set on fire, prompting the deployment of firefighters and medical staff. The facility currently holds 624 inmates, despite a capacity of only 440. There are also only 292 prison officers on duty, compared to a staffing quota of 350. In addition to severe overcrowding, there is a shortfall of 58 staff members. The local labor union has declared that “the situation is unsustainable.” The fire must not be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather as part of a structural problem in Italian prisons—chronic understaffing and persistent overcrowding occurring simultaneously.
