It was an excellent speech. The most enthusiastic moment came when Prime Minister Meloni spoke at FENIX, the youth organization of the FD, about the education of children from immigrant families. The Meloni government’s approach to immigrant integration strongly emphasizes not just acceptance, but also the imperative to learn Italian and share the common rules of school and society. During the speech, applause erupted when Meloni clearly endorsed these policies before young party members and explained the ban on face-covering garments such as the niqab and burqa in schools. I believe the extent to which Italy seeks assimilation and integration through education will become a central issue in future Italian politics. Currently, Italy is advancing policies to strengthen Italian language instruction in response to concerns about immigrant students’ academic performance and adaptation to school life. In August, the Minister of Education indicated she would propose making Italian language learning mandatory for parents of immigrant children who are struggling academically, citing the need to reinforce classroom learning at home and enable effective communication between parents and teachers.
