My landlord raised my rent by $275 this year. Nothing changed. Same apartment. Same parking spot. Same appliances. Same building. Same landlord. I asked what the $275 increase was for. He said property taxes, insurance and maintenance costs had all gone up. So I asked if any of those had actually changed inside my apartment. He said no. My apartment didn't get bigger. It didn't get nicer. The building didn't get renovated. I didn't get ne parking space. But somehow I'm paying another $3,300 a year to live in the exact same place. I asked him if my rent could go back down if his costs eventually went down. He laughed. That's when I realized these increases only seem to work in one direction.
