Protecting teachers from students has become part of a school’s responsibility. How does Italy’s education system confront the fear that teachers, standing in their classrooms, might be stabbed or targeted for their lives? The fact that a student of Congolese origin saved the teacher must be separated from broader issues of immigrant integration. Nevertheless, in Italian schools, where the number of students from diverse backgrounds is growing, finding a way to balance integration with the safety of both teachers and students is unavoidable. I believe Italian schools have become distinctly different places than they were before.
