My coworker pays almost $700 a month for health insurance. That's $8,400 a year. His deductible is $5,000. So he can spend $13,400 out of pocket before he feels like his insurance is actually helping him. And that's before copays, prescriptions, specialists, or anything the insurance company decides isn't “medically necessary.” Then someone will tell him he's lucky to have insurance. Lucky? He is paying more than $8,000 a year for the privilege of still being scared to go to the doctor.
