Claude Code now officially supports AGENTS.md! With version 2.1.277, Claude Code has officially adopted the AGENTS.md standard. For over a year, Anthropic refused to support this standard and provided no response—until Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke threatened to disable Claude Code, prompting a reply. AGENTS.md is now the universal project configuration file for mainstream coding agents; nearly all others, including Codex and Cursor, use it—except Claude Code, which previously insisted solely on its proprietary CLAUDE.md format. Twenty-five days after Tobi Lütke’s threat, Claude Code 2.1.277 was released with official AGENTS.md support. However, it still prioritizes CLAUDE.md and automatically falls back to AGENTS.md only if CLAUDE.md is absent. This behavior can be toggled in /config. I no longer need to create symbolic links between the two files.
