I love @ufc. I’ve never tried any combat sport myself, but I really admire the athletes - these modern gladiators fighting in the cage. I also admire @danawhite and what he has built over the last two decades. UFC is currently one of the fastest-growing entertainment brands in the world. However, I have one big issue with it: Cheating. It’s not just the cheating itself, but the way the organization rewards cheaters and those who take unfair advantages - whether by bending the rules or blatantly ignoring them. Last year, @AspinallMMA almost went blind after @ciryl_gane nearly gouged both of his eyes. It took him months to recover, and it could easily have been a career-ending injury caused by a completely illegal move. These rules exist largely to protect the athletes’ health and lives, yet it seems that fighters who bend or break them are being rewarded. Cyril continuously eye-pokes his opponents in almost every fight, and yet he’s the one who gets a shot at the biggest event to date. If the UFC doesn’t care about enforcing the rules, then just say it openly so all athletes can fight the same way. Right now there’s a weird, unfair balance where those who ignore the rules get ahead - while causing life - threatening injuries to others. In the last fight, we could have easily lost one of the best fighters in UFC history, @AlexPereiraUFC, after he received around 10 illegal shots to the back of the head, most of them elbows - the most dangerous strikes of all. If you’re not aware of how dangerous shots to the back of the head are and why they’re illegal, here’s a short video of Prichard Colon, who got paralyzed and almost died from a few punches with a boxing glover at the back of his head. It's been 10 years and he still have not recovered.
